Howard Lederer grew up in a family of five where he liked participating in different card games at a young age. He found himself getting really competitive in the above-mentioned card games while playing his father. After finishing secondary school, Howard made a decision to put college on hold for a bit and relocated to New York City to compete in some formidable chess. While participating in chess, he was introduced to a poker game taking place in the back of the room. Howard's initial 2 years were rough as he played extensive hours and lost most times. He made some additional money by being an assistant for the poker enthusiasts. He judged he could improve his game by adjusting his life away from poker. He brought about an attempt to get more sleep and focus attention more on poker.

The actual improvement in his skills began when he began gambling at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the the most favorable gamblers would regularly compete against one another. Howard was able to access a number of the foremost minds in chess. With their help, Howard Lederer would sharpen his strategic thinking skills. He used these strategy concepts in the game of NL holdem.

Howard Lederer also assisted his sister Annie Duke master poker. She was an excellent student of poker as she constantly asked questions about the right way to make the proper decision. He told Annie Duke to head out to Sin City and compete in the World Series of Poker competition. Annie Duke is one of the best female players the poker arena ever. Howard relocated to Las Vegas in 1993 and played money games for the following 10 years. When the World Poker Tournament grew in popularity, he decided to compete in more tournaments.
