Howard Lederer grew up in a family of five in which he liked playing numerous card games at a young age. He found himself getting really aggressive in these particular card games as he was competing against his dad. After graduating from high school, Howard made a decision to place college on hold for a little while and headed to New York City to participate in some serious chess. While competing in chess, he was brought in to a poker game going on in the rear of the room. Howard's initial 2 years were tough as he played extensive hours and lost most times. He earned some additional money by becoming an assistant for the poker players. He theorized he could better his game by adjusting his life away from poker. He brought about an attempt to get more rest and focus more on the game.

The actual advancement in his skills began when he began betting at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the best gamblers would regularly challenge one another. Howard had access into several of the greatest players in chess. With their assistance, Howard would sharpen his logical thinking skills. Howard applied these strategic concepts to the game of NL hold'em.

Howard also assisted his sibling Annie Duke learn poker. She was an excellent student of the game as she constantly asked questions about the right way to make the proper decision. He told Annie Duke to head out to Vegas and compete in the World Series of Poker tournaments. Annie is one of the strongest female players the poker world ever. Howard Lederer moved to Vegas in 1993 and played money games for the successive decade. When the World Poker Tournament grew in popularity, he made the decision to compete in more tournaments.
