Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is often times seen as one of the most complex but favored poker games. It is a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for play from every level of players. This is the main reason why a once irrelevant game, has increased in popularity so rapidly.

Omaha hi lo begins just like a regular game of Omaha. Four cards are given out to every player. A sequence of betting follows where players can bet, check, or drop out. Three cards are handed out, this is known as the flop. One more sequence of wagering happens. After all the gamblers have either called or dropped out, an additional card is flipped on the turn. an additional round of betting ensues and then the river card is revealed. The entrants will have to make the strongest high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is where a number of entrants often get flustered. Contrasted to Holdem, in which the board can make up everyone's hand, in Omaha hi/low the player has to use precisely 3 cards from the board, and exactly 2 hole cards. No more, no less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are two ways a pot could be won: the "high hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is just how it sounds. It is the best hand out of every player's, it doesn't matter if it is a straight, flush, full house. It's the same notion in almost every poker game.

The lower hand is more difficult, but really opens up the play. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes don't count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that can be put together, with the worst being A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and below. The lower hand takes half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there is no low hand presented, the high hand wins the entire pot.

Although it seems difficult at the outset, after a few hands you will be able to pick up on the fundamental subtleties of the game with ease. Seeing as you have people betting for the low and wagering for the high, and since such a large number of cards are in play, Omaha/8 provides an overwhelming array of betting choices and owing to the fact that you have numerous players shooting for the high hand, and many trying for the low.
