Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is frequently seen as one of the most complicated but favored poker games. It is a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites play from all levels of players. This is the main reason why a once irrelevant game, has increased in acceptance so amazingly.

Omaha/8 starts exactly like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are dealt to every player. A sequence of betting ensues in which players can bet, check, or fold. Three cards are given out, this is referred to as the flop. A further round of betting happens. Once all the players have in turn called or dropped out, another card is revealed on the turn. Another round of wagering happens and then the river card is revealed. The entrants must attempt to make the best high and low five card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is where a few entrants get baffled. Unlike Holdem, where the board can be everyone's hand, in Omaha hi low the player must use exactly three cards from the board, and exactly two cards from their hand. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot might be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is just what it sounds like. It is the best hand out of every player's, it doesn't matter if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the same approach in nearly all poker games.

The lower hand is more complex, but certainly free's up the play. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes don't count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that can be put together, with the worst being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The lower hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and lower. The low hand wins half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there's no lower hand available, the higher hand wins the complete pot.

It may seem difficult at the outset, after a few hands you will be agile enough to get the basic subtleties of play easily enough. Seeing as you have people betting for the low and wagering for the high, and since such a large number of cards are being used at the same time, Omaha 8 or better offers an overwhelming array of wagering options and owing to the fact that you have many individuals battling for the high hand, along with many battling for the low. If you like a game with a considerable amount of outs and actions, it's worth your time to participate in Omaha/8.
