Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is often times viewed as one of the most complex but popular poker games. It is a variation that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites action from every level of players. This is the main reason why a once invisible variation, has expanded in popularity so quickly.

Omaha hi/low begins just like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are dealt to each player. A round of betting follows in which players can bet, check, or fold. 3 cards are handed out, this is called the flop. A further round of betting ensues. Once all the gamblers have in turn called or dropped out, another card is flipped on the turn. a further round of betting happens and then the river card is revealed. The gamblers must attempt to make the strongest high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is where many players get confused. Unlike Texas Hold 'Em, in which the board can be every player's hand, in Omaha hi-low the player must use precisely three cards on the board, and precisely two hole cards. No more, not a single card less. Contrary to normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot could be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is just how it sounds. It's the strongest possible hand out of everyone's, whether that is a straight, flush, full house. It is the same approach in almost every poker game.

A lower hand is more difficult, but really opens up the play. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes don't count. A low hand is the weakest hand that could be put together, with the worst being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes don't count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and below. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there is no lower hand presented, the high hand takes the whole pot.

While it seems complicated initially, following a few rounds you will be agile enough to pick up on the fundamental nuances of the game with ease.
