Phil Ivey has been branded as the number one poker contender on the globe by many of the top-ranked professionals. Phil was born in Riverside, CA and relocated to Jersey before his first birthday. His papa taught Phil one cent-ante 5-Card Stud poker. From that point on, Phil was hooked on poker and wanted to pickup whatever he could about poker. Phil routinely would tell his grandparents that he wanted to be a professional poker player. Phil didn't let the negative feedback from other people destroy his dream of being one of the strongest poker players on the planet.

Phil started competing seriously after acquiring a fake ID with the name of Jerome. He practiced his abilities at the poker rooms of Atlantic City. The beginning few years for him were a teaching period and winning was not a regular thing at the time. He became known at the 2000 WSOP where he achieved two final tables and won his 1st World Series of Poker bracelet, in a two dollar, five hundred Pot-Limit Omaha event. At the last table he destroyed a number of the well known pros including "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.

Phil decided to take his game to the next level and headed out west to Vegas. He continues to compete in in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the greatest players on the planet. Ivey credits his achievements to discipline and an undying love for poker. Phil states that he is learning every day and is very abashed about his achievements. He admits to making blunders in each session of poker and always strives to improve.

Despite the fact that Phil has won some large tournaments, he likes winning cash games on a normal basis.
