Phil Ivey has been labeled as the number one poker contender in the world by most of the top-ranked professionals. He was born in Riverside, CA and moved to NJ before his first birthday. His grandfather taught Phil penny-ante 5-Card Stud poker. From then on on, he was addicted to poker and wished to pickup everything he possibly could about the game. He routinely would tell his elders that he wanted to be a professional poker player. He did not let the detrimental feedback from others destroy his dream of becoming one of the best poker competitors on the planet.

Phil began playing seriously after getting a false ID with the name of Jerome. He sharpened his techniques at the poker rooms in Atlantic City. The first number of years for Phil were a learning opportunity and coming away with a win was not a regular thing at the time. Phil made his mark at the 2000 World Series of Poker when he made two final tables and won his 1st WSOP bracelet, in a two dollar, 500 Pot-Limit Omaha game. At the final table he destroyed quite a few of the better known pros including "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.

He decided to take his skills to the next level and headed out west to Vegas. Phil continues to compete in in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the greatest players in the world. Ivey credits his achievements to dedication and an undying passion for the game of poker. Phil says that he is picking up skills every single day and is very abashed about his achievements. Phil knows he makes mistakes in each game of poker and constantly aspires to get better.

Even though Phil has come first in some big-time tournaments, he favors winning cash games on a normal basis.
