Howard Lederer lived in a family of five in which he loved playing different card games at a young age. He found himself getting very competitive in the above-mentioned card games as he was competing against his dad. After graduating from high school, Howard decided to place higher education on hold for a little while and moved away to New York City to play some big-time chess. While participating in chess, he was introduced to a poker game going on in the back of the room. Howard's initial two years were difficult as he would play countless hours and do not win a majority of the time. He made some additional money by being an assistant for the poker enthusiasts. He theorized he might better his game by analyzing his life outside of poker. He brought about an attempt to get more sleep and concentrate more on the game.

The definite advancement in his game began when he began betting at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the greatest players would regularly challenge each other. He had access into a few of the best minds in chess. With their help, Howard Lederer would tweak his logical thinking abilities. Howard applied these strategy ideas to the game of NL holdem.

Howard Lederer also helped his sibling Annie Duke master poker. Annie Duke was a great student of poker as she constantly asked questions about the right way to make the correct choice. Howard told Annie Duke to move out to Las Vegas and play in the WSOP competition. She is one of the best women players the poker arena today. Howard headed to Vegas in 1993 and competed in cash games for the following 10 years. When the WPT gained popularity, Howard made the decision to play more tournaments.
