Howard Lederer was born into in a family of five where he enjoyed betting on numerous card games at a young age. He discovered himself becoming very aggressive in the above-mentioned card games while playing his dad. After finishing high school, Howard decided to place college on hold for a bit and moved to New York City to play some big-time chess. While participating in chess, he was introduced to a poker game going on in the rear of the room. Howard's initial 2 years were rough as he would play countless hours and fail to win most times. He earned some additional money by being an assistant for the poker enthusiasts. He theorized he could better his game by analyzing his life outside of poker. He made an effort to acquire more rest and focus more on the game.

The definite improvement in his abilities happened when he began gambling at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the the most favorable players would regularly challenge one another. Howard had access into a few of the greatest players in chess. With their assistance, Howard Lederer would hone his strategic thinking abilities. He applied these strategic concepts to the game of NL texas hold'em.

Howard Lederer also assisted his sister Annie Duke learn poker. Annie Duke was a superb student of the game as she constantly asked questions about how to make the proper choice. Howard Lederer told Annie Duke to move out to Vegas and compete in the World Series of Poker tournaments. She is one of the greatest female players the poker arena has ever seen. Howard headed to Vegas in 1993 and played money games for the successive 10 years. When the World Poker Tournament grew in popularity, he made the decision to play more tournaments.
